Some argue that CSR is merely\u00a0<a title=\"Display window\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Display_window\">window-dressing<\/a>, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful\u00a0<a title=\"Multinational corporations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multinational_corporations\">multinational corporations<\/a>\u00a0(Wikipedia) and it&#8217;s hard to believe that almost thirty years have passed since &#8220;greenwashing&#8221; \u00a0came into vogue in a big way.<\/p>\n<p>The term\u00a0<i>greenwashing<\/i>\u00a0was coined by\u00a0<a title=\"New York\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York\">New York<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Environmentalist\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmentalist\">environmentalist<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Jay Westervelt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jay_Westervelt\">Jay Westervelt<\/a>\u00a0in a 1986 essay regarding the\u00a0<a title=\"Hospitality industry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hospitality_industry\">hotel industry<\/a>&#8216;s practice of placing placards in each room promoting reuse of towels ostensibly to &#8220;save the environment.&#8221; Westervelt noted that, in most cases, little or no effort toward reducing energy waste was being made by these institutions\u2014as evidenced by the lack of cost reduction this practice effected. (Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re staring to not only hear but also see a new &#8220;trend&#8221; in corporate communications. It sort of sounds like transparency via the social networks but it&#8217;s\u00a0disingenuous. My guess is the stumbling block lies with the legal and compliance folks, whose focus on what&#8217;s legal always seems to trump what&#8217;s right. But in reality, consumers don&#8217;t want to hear about washing vegetables as much as they do about culture, values and authenticity.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That&#8217;s the stuff that trust is made of.
