Six months later we released our second book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/trustacrossamerica.com\/order.shtml\">Trust Inc. A Guide for Boards &amp; C-Suites<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>In this book<em>,<\/em>\u00a0sixty\u00a0experts have joined forces to offer 100 strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the month of\u00a0August, we will be featuring 31 essays from our second book. Each stands alone\u00a0as an excellent resource in guiding Boards and C-Suites on driving a trust agenda at the highest level in the organization, and provides tools for those who choose to implement trust-building programs in their organization.<\/p>\n<p>This final essay wraps up our series with a short piece that I wrote for this book. \u00a0For those interested in a brief bio, I am the\u00a0\u00a0Co-founder and Executive Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 600; color: #1e5cd7;\">Trust Across America \u2013Trust Around the World\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and editor of \u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/trustacrossamerica.com\/order.shtml\">Trust Inc.<\/a> series of books.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a02012 I was named one of \u201c25 Women who are Changing the World\u201d by Good Business International. In a previous life, I worked as a\u00a0consultant to McKinsey &amp; Company, and for the past 20 years, I have owned an\u00a0award-winning communications\u00a0firm in the NY Metro area called\u00a0Next Decade, Inc. I majored in International Affairs at Lafayette College and have an MBA from Baruch at the City University of New York. There is\u00a0no shortage of them in communities, businesses and the government. \u00a0 But those who choose to proactively lead\u00a0with trust will find any reputation blow to be softer and speedier, and the recovery much easier.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>First, let\u2019s look at the central attributes of a crisis:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>It has the potential to do significant reputational damage<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It has the potential to hurt at least one group of stakeholders- consumers, shareholders, employees, community, etc.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It is unique and often unpredictable (although not always)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It is of interest to the media<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Now let\u2019s look at the 5 essential SHORT-TERM\u00a0measures leaders must take as the crisis unfolds:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>In the first 24 hours communicate widely and communicate consistently<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Tell the truth<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Tell it accurately<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Tell it fully<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Tell it yourself<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>And the 5 essential LONG-TERM\u00a0measures for those choosing to lead with trust:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Accept responsibility<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Take long-term corrective action, not a short term band aid<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Address any systemic problems<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Rebuild broken bridges<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Continue to communicate openly<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>It\u2019s not rocket science, but the missing ingredient is ALWAYS trust, and that\u2019s what keeps the crisis consultants and specialists in business.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/?p=1322\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">business <\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #1e5cd7;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/?p=1322\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">case for trust<\/span><\/a>\u201d <\/span>has been made.
