First and foremost is character.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Warren Bennis<\/p>\n<p>Ask any group of people whom they trust and the two most common answers will be \u201cparents\u201d and \u201csiblings.\u201d Ask them why and they will talk about\u00a0longevity, familiarity and shared experiences. Rarely will the answer to the first question be a coworker or a boss.<\/p>\n<p>What makes families unique? Each has its own culture. But if the family culture is corrupt, so are the offspring. The same applies to organizations, regardless of their size, industry or composition.<\/p>\n<p>Someone recently asked me if there were any &#8220;quick fixes&#8221; for low-trust organizations. My answer was simply &#8220;Diseases can&#8217;t be cured with Band Aids.&#8221; Trust takes time and it is built in incremental steps.<\/p>\n<p>If you lead an organization and want to build trust into its DNA, it all begins (and ends)\u00a0with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with an assessment of yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Are you trustworthy?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you have integrity, character and values?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you share those values with your family?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you instill them in your children?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you take your personal values to work?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Perform an organizational trust audit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Have you built trust into\u00a0your organizational\u00a0culture with the support of your Board?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Is it reflected in your\u00a0statement of values and credo?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How do you practice it?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How well do you communicate it?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can it outlive you?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consider\u00a0your internal stakeholders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Do you discuss trust\u00a0daily?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you encourage feedback?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you share a consistent vision?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you model openness and vulnerability?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you use transparent decision-making?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you ask for input?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you have long-term trust-building goals and execute them well, one by one?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you share every \u201cWow\u201d moment in your organization?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you communicate, communicate, communicate?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consider your\u00a0external stakeholders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Have you shared your vision and values in building a trustworthy organization?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Have you identified the outcome(s)\u00a0you are seeking?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Have you defined your intentions for each of our stakeholder groups?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Have you made promises that you will keep?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Have you determined the steps you will take to fulfill these promises?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, the fish rots from the head.
