For many of us, it’s the time of year when we wish for warm weather and the sound of crashing waves.\u00a0Take a walk on the beach with Rob Galford as he maps out one of the trust-building activities contained in our new\u00a0book,\u00a0Trust Inc., 52 Weeks of Activities and Inspirations for Building Workplace Trust<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A \u201cWalk on the Beach\u201d for Trust\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Not all of our business relationships are perfect.\u00a0 In fact, too many of them are far from it.\u00a0 Yet merely recognizing that reality doesn\u2019t do anything for us, doesn\u2019t make things better.\u00a0 The quo remains status, conflicts are buried, “work-arounds” are devised, and while an easy (or uneasy) peace may reign, the underlying problem remains unresolved.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t go away.\u00a0 It becomes an opportunity missed.\u00a0 And it doesn\u2019t have to be that way.<\/em><\/p>\n

The purpose of this assignment and subsequent action is to provide you with an opportunity to focus on improving one or more of your important working relationships in a way that has not occurred before. The first part of the process entails completing six key questions in advance.\u00a0 You will then spend some uninterrupted time with your counterpart in a setting away from the workplace, a so-called \u201cwalk on the beach\u201d, where you will describe and discuss your respective responses to the key questions.\u00a0\u00a0 While at the outset there may naturally be a sense of apprehension, risk or discomfort in addressing things so directly, it will be apparent upon completion just how much has been accomplished merely by having had the conversation.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are four prerequisites for a successful experience and a worthwhile outcome.<\/em><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A belief that a relationship has the possibility of improvement<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you firmly, deeply, truly believe there really is zero chance of improving a particular relationship that, in effect, you are \u201cdone with it\u201d, then don\u2019t spend the time doing this.\u00a0 The very fact that the other person might hold out some hope for the relationship, or is willing to do this walk may help you reconsider your view.\u00a0 If it does not, be ready to discuss with them why you are unwilling to try.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
