{"id":2654,"date":"2015-04-18T11:43:38","date_gmt":"2015-04-18T15:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/?p=2654"},"modified":"2015-04-18T11:43:38","modified_gmt":"2015-04-18T15:43:38","slug":"low-trust-risk-vs-reward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/?p=2654","title":{"rendered":"Low Trust: Risk vs. Reward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=1005\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1005\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/TAATAW_LOGO_H_color-tagline-300x122.jpg\" alt=\"TAA_R2_EDIT-CS3\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We all know the next crisis will come&#8230;.but in the meantime it&#8217;s business as usual.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those were the exact words spoken by the Chief Communications Officer of a well-known financial services company at a recent conference I attended on trust.<\/p>\n<p>Other than an enlightened handful, most companies continue to ignore the business case for trust and its inherent strategic advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fewer crises and the ability to recover more rapidly as a result of having &#8220;banked&#8221; trust<\/li>\n<li>Faster decision making<\/li>\n<li>Higher employee engagement<\/li>\n<li>Greater innovation (high trust fuels\u00a0high innovation, not the other way around)<\/li>\n<li>Increased long-term profitability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But instead, let&#8217;s continue to watch trust decline across all major institutions, talk about it from time to time,\u00a0and choose\u00a0never to\u00a0implement long-term trust-building strategies. After all, it&#8217;s &#8220;business as usual&#8221; until the next crisis as evidenced by our current collective mentality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disengaged boards with minimal diversity<\/li>\n<li>Short-term profit maximization\u00a0at all costs<\/li>\n<li>Decreasing CEO tenure and increasing compensation packages tied to quarterly earnings<\/li>\n<li>Siloized decision making<\/li>\n<li>Increased regulation and larger legal and compliance departments<\/li>\n<li>High employee turnover<\/li>\n<li>Using CSR or sustainability &#8220;programs&#8221; as corporate window dressing<\/li>\n<li>Taking trust for granted or\u00a0passing it off to the communications folks like a hot potato.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But as a reminder, industry is not destiny and &#8220;hats off&#8221; to those companies and organizations that have chosen a different path.
