I think it\u2019s safe to say that the \u201cbuck stopped\u201d on the CEO&#8217;s desk at Wells Fargo, United Airlines and Equifax, to name just a few leadership fails this year.<\/p>\n<p>While bad news continues to sell, not all is gloom and doom. When I launched<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustacrossamerica.com\/\">\u00a0Trust Across America-Trust Around the World\u00a0<\/a>almost ten years ago,\u00a0one of our objectives was to redirect\u00a0attention to the &#8220;good.&#8221; Great corporate leaders are plentiful, but their stories often get buried amongst all the\u00a0bad news.<\/p>\n<p>The list below is not about philanthropy or CSR, but rather a long-term holistic embrace of trustworthy leadership and the resulting impact on ALL stakeholders, not just shareholders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ten Great CEO \u201cTrust\u201d Stories for 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(not in any rank order)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>#1 <strong>David Reiling<\/strong>, CEO at Sunrise Banks\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefinancialbrand.com\/69072\/sunrise-banks-david-reiling\/\">talks about<\/a> community enrichment, innovation and its impact on underserved consumers in banking.<\/p>\n<p>#2 Basecamp CEO <strong>Jason Fried<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/08\/03\/the-ceo-of-basecamp-only-allows-employees-to-put-in-a-32-hour-workweek.html\">limits both meetings and work hours<\/a> to ensure his employees lead well-balanced lives.<\/p>\n<p>#3 <strong>Amy Hanson<\/strong>, CEO of Hanson Consulting <a href=\"http:\/\/seattlebusinessmag.com\/technology\/featured-100-best-company-work-for-2017-hanson\">encourages both teamwork and corporate transparency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>#4 <strong>Rose Marcario<\/strong> runs Patagonia and for her, <a href=\"https:\/\/consciouscompanymedia.com\/sustainable-business\/strategy-models\/patagonias-ceo-says-conscious-leaders-need-stand-something\/\">conscious leadership<\/a> has resulted in the quadrupling of profits.<\/p>\n<p>#5 Fifty-year old Earth Friendly Products CEO <strong>Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.king5.com\/mobile\/article\/money\/fair-wages-contribute-to-50-years-of-success-says-ceo\/432373681\">pays her employees<\/a> a minimum of $17.00 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>#6 In an industry fraught with reputation disasters, <strong>Gary Kelly<\/strong> at Southwest Airlines not only <a href=\"https:\/\/trueparallel.com\/ceo-improve-customer-experience\/\">puts customers first<\/a> but insists on making flying enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>#7 Love, trust and commitment to excellence are how <strong>Mark Stefanski,<\/strong> CEO (for 30 years) of Third Federal Savings and Loan <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefexecutive.net\/third-federal-savings-and-loan-ceo-puts-customer-first\/\">describes his values<\/a>, while eighty percent of his associates are women.<\/p>\n<p>#8 <strong>Mark Benioff<\/strong> at Salesforce is <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/13\/technology\/marc-benioff-salesforce-equality\/index.html\">trying to close<\/a> the gender and racial pay gap.<\/p>\n<p>#9 <strong>Cathy Engelbert<\/strong>, Deloitte\u2019s CEO has a 94% employee approval rating and still <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/01\/02\/cathy-engelbert-fortune-unfiltered\/\">manages to balance work and family<\/a>. (After all, family is certainly a stakeholder in the life of a CEO.)<\/p>\n<p>#10 <strong>Chip Bergh<\/strong>, who took the helm at Levi Strauss in 2011, has <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/five-years-ago-my-sons-didnt-even-consider-levis-jeans-levis-ceo\/articleshow\/60147724.cms\">created a long-term focused culture<\/a> where employees feel safe to experiment\u2026 and it\u2019s worked.<\/p>\n<p>(And BTW: Chip and I share the same (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafayette.edu\/\">Lafayette College<\/a> alma mater.)<\/p>\n<p>Whether male or female (count them on this list) trustworthy CEOs know that philanthropy and CSR only go so far in building high trust companies. Trustworthy CEOs practice what we call VIP Leadership (Values, Integrity &amp; Promises kept). The CEOs mentioned on our 2017 list don\u2019t just \u201ctalk\u201d about stakeholder trust, they walk it. Community enrichment, focus on employees, conscious leadership, treatment of customers, protecting the environment.
