Powell’s timeless “rules” of leadership were first printed in the August 13, 1989 issue of Parade magazine and are reproduced below.<\/p>\n

  1. It ain’t as bad as you think.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Get mad, then get over it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. It can be done.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. You can’t make someone else’s choices.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Check small things.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Share credit.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Remain calm. Be kind.<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. Have a vision.<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Don’t take counsel of your fears or naysayers.<\/span><\/li>\n
