Have you taught your kids about trust? If you are like most parents, the answer is \u201cNo.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Yet the family is where trust training begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You might say \u201cTrust cannot be taught. It\u2019s something we take for granted, always assuming it is present.\u201d In reality, trust is a learned competence. As Stephen M.R. Covey reminds us ,\u201dIt is something that you can get good at, something you can measure and improve, something for which you can &#8220;move the needle.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Sadly, mistrust is also a learned behavior.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">An infant\u2019s psychosocial development begins with the trust versus mistrust stage according to psychologist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/erik-erikson-biography-1902-1994-2795538\"><span class=\"s2\">Erik Erikson\u2019s<\/span><\/a>\u00a0theory. Beginning at birth and lasting until your child is around 18 months old, it is the most important period of your child&#8217;s life, as it shapes their view of the world as well as their overall personality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Children raised by consistently unreliable, unpredictable parents who fail to meet these basic needs eventually develop an overall sense of mistrust. <\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Murphy G, Peters K, Wilkes L, Jackson D.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3109\/01612840.2014.971385\"><span class=\"s2\">Childhood parental mental illness: Living with fear and mistrust<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Mistrust can cause children to become fearful, confused, and anxious, all of which make it difficult to form healthy relationships. This, in turn, can lead to poor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/types-of-social-support-3144960\"><span class=\"s2\">social support<\/span><\/a>, isolation, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/loneliness-causes-effects-and-treatments-2795749\"><span class=\"s2\">loneliness<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Think about the trust impact on your kids when they hear you say the following at home:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Children should be seen and not heard<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Stop crying or I\u2019ll give you something to cry about<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Can\u2019t you ever do anything right?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Why can\u2019t you be more like________?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do as I say, not as I do.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">And these trust-busting words are just the tip of the iceberg. How about children learning trust\/mistrust by example? <\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Are you disrespectful to your spouse in the presence of your kids?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do you make yourself physically and emotionally available when family members and friends need you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do you keep your word and your promises?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do you tell the truth?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do you act like a bully or insist on winning at all costs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li9\"><span class=\"s4\">Do you take the time to listen?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">As children grow older, trust is further eroded in school when teachers abuse their power through verbal humiliation, yelling, and even bullying.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">And certainly on the ball fields by coaches who exhibit abusive and mistrustful behavior towards their athletes to attempt to ensure the \u201cwin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Even your children\u2019s friends can be a source of early lessons in trust and mistrust depending on their own family values and home environment.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Whether you are a parent, a teacher or a coach, as Warren Bennis put it, &#8220;Leadership without mutual trust is a contradiction in terms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Have I convinced you that trust is a learned competence?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">If asked today, what would your children say about your family\u2019s values? Is trust one of them? The window of opportunity to teach you kids about trust closes quickly. Take the opportunity while you still can.
